About NERIE

The North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE) is located in the scenic Umiam village, about 20 kms from Shillong city. It’s part of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), serving the educational needs of eight North Eastern states: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. NERIE’s history traces back to 1992, when the NCERT’s ‘Task force’ recommended its establishment in the North East.

In 1995, the NCERT combined its field units in Guwahati and Shillong to create NERIE in Shillong. Prof C.L Anand from Arunachal University played a key role in planning the institute. By 2005, NERIE expanded with faculty and administrative staff. In 2012, it moved from Shillong to its permanent campus in Nongsder village, Umiam, to accommodate its growing human resources.
